Paul Van Dyk to niewątpliwie jedna z największych gwiazd muzyki elektronicznej na świecie. Za tym stwierdzeniem świadczą fakty, które w bardzo przejrzysty sposób potwierdzają te słowa. Przedstawię zatem tylko kilka z nich. Rok 1999 – Paul Van Dyk zostaje wybrany przez czytelników kultowego magazynu “DJ Magazine” najlepszym twórcą muzyki elektronicznej. W plebiscycie wyprzedził największe legendy tego gatunku muzycznego: Fatboy Slim’a czy też Paul’a Okenfold’a. Ten sam rok – Music Awards w Londynie, Paul Van Dyk otrzymuje tytuł najlepszego międzynarodowego DJ’a, ten sam tytuł przyznaje mu magazyn “Ministry of Sounds”. Klub “Gatecrasher” – 6-godzinny set Paula Van Dyka renomowany magazyn “Music” uznaje “drugą najlepszą nocą wszechczasów”. Magazyn “MixMag” – rok 1999 – Paul Van Dyk zostaje wybrany człowiekiem roku. Tytuł lidera “Trance Nacji” przyznaje kultowy magazyn “Music Magazine”. To tylko część sukcesów Paul’a które osiągnął przez wszyskie lata swojej kariery i nie mówi dość. Paul Van Dyk po dziś dzień nadal jest jednym z największych gwiazd muzyki elektronicznej na świecie. Na tegorocznej gali Dancestar Awards która obyła się w Miami na początku tego roku, Paul Van Dyk znów okazał się najlepszy zdobywając aż trzy tytuły w kategoriach: Najlepszy Międzynarodowy DJ - kategoria do której był nominowany razem z takimi gwiazdami jak: Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, John Digweed, Richie Hawtin, Danny Howells, Sander Kleinenberg, Steve Lawler oraz Paul Oakenfold. Można by powiedzieć, że tą nagrodą Paul odwdzięczył się DJ'owi Tiesto za to, że zdeplasował go w rankingu na najlepszego DJ'a roku 2003 (TOP 100 DJ's) opublikowanym pod koniec minionego roku przez "DJ MAGAZINE". Drugą kategorią w której Paul zwyciężył była kategoria: "Najlepsza muzyka w reklamie telewizyjnej" - tutaj zwyciężyła ścieżka dźwiękowa z reklamy Motoroli wyprodukowana wraz z Felix'em Da Housecat'em oraz DJ'em Colette. Trzecią nagrodę Paul Van Dyk otrzymał w kategorii: Największe Wydarzenie za Summerstage Party 2003, imprezę która odbyła się w Nowojorskim Central Parku. Sam Paul o swoim sukcesie mówi krótko: “Nie nazwałbym siebie liderem. Nigdy nie chciałem tworzyć muzyki ani dla pieniędzy, ani dla mody. Dla mnie ta cała otoczka popularności jest bardzo przyjemna, lecz tak naprawdę liczy się dla mnie sama muzyka. Zawsze wkładam w swoje dzieła całe swoje serce, pragnę aby moja muzyka była przepełniona uczuciami. Przez wiele lat tworczości ciągle obserwowałem reakcję swojej publiczności, przez muzykę chciałem nawiązać bliższy kontakt z słuchaczami, chciałem zrozumieć ich pragnienia.”
Paul Van Dyk urodził się w 1971 roku, dokładnie 16 grudnia w Niemczech w mieście Eisenhuettenstadt. Od najmłodszych lat jego pasją była muzyka, jednakże mieszkając i dorastając w komunistycznych Niemczech we Wschodnim Berlinie nie miał większych możliwości na zrealizowanie swoich muzycznych planów. Dopiero po zjednoczeniu Niemiec Paul mógł zacząć się samorealizować muzycznie. Bardzo entuzjastycznie wspomina tamten okres i z chęcią o nim opowiada: “To było coś wspaniałego, mogliśmy w końcu zobaczyć zachodnią telewizję, usłyszeć zachodnie radio. Nagrywaliśmy swoją muzykę i “puszczaliśmy” ją na naszych imprezach ponieważ we Wschodnich Niemczech nie było czegoś takiego, jak kultura klubowa. Pamiętam,że w tamtych czasach sluchałem audycji radiowej Moniki Dietl. Byłem pod ogromnym wrażeniem muzyki grupy “The Smith” oraz “New Order”. Niosła ona ze sobą wiele emocji i była naprawdę bardzo mocna.”
Po upadku muru Berlińskiego w 1989 roku, kultura klubowa w bardzo szybkim tempie rozszerzyła się po całym Berlinie. Głównie można było usłyszeć “Detroit – Techno” – bardzo ostrą odmianę Techno. Paul szybko polubił ten rodzaj muzyki, ale w głebi serca czuł, że czegoś tak naprawdę jej brakuje. Zaczął więc sam poszukiwać tego, czego brakowało mu w ówczesnej muzyce klubowej. Bywając w klubach i pracując nad autorskimi remixami minął mu kolejny rok. W roku 1991 udało mu się wydać swoją pierwszą kasetę demo zawierającą jego własne arranżacje znanych utworów. Było to dość odważne, gdyż Paul wszystkie remixy stworzył na swój własny, nowatrski w tamtym czasie styl i nikt tak na prawdę nie wiedział, czy taki klimat muzyczny spodoba się ludziom. W marcu tego samego roku Paul miał się o tym dowiedzieć osobiście, gdyż jego remixy po raz pierwszy zostały zaprezentowane szerszej publiczności w popularnym Berlińskim klubie “Tresor”. Remixy okazały się bardzo dobre, co sprawiło, że Paul uwierzył w siebie i w to co robi. Po tym pierwszym sukcesie postanowił tworzyć swoje autorskie produkcje. Nie trzeba było długo czekać na efekty tej decyzji – w roku 1992 gotowa była pierwsza oficjalna kompozycja Paula Van Dyka o bardzo optymistycznym tytule: “Perfect Day”. Ten utwór razem z kawałkiem “Cosmic Baby” został wydany tym samym roku jako “Visions of Shiva”. “(...) Cieszyłem się jak dziecko trzymając w ręku moje pierwsze własne nagranie.” – wspomina Paul. Wydawcą “Perfect Day” była undergroundowa Niemiecka wytwórnia “MFS” dzięki której Paul “wypłynął na szerokie wody”. To właśnie dzięki tej wytwórni, a raczej ludziom tam pracującym Paul zawdzięcza swój sukces i zawsze bardzo miło wspomina współracę z “MFS”.
Rok 1993 Paul rozpoczął wydaniem kolejnej produkcji, która okazała się klubowym hitem roku. Był nim remix “Love Stimulation” grupy Humate. W kolejnym roku pojawił się pierwszy album Paul’a zatytułowany “45 RPM” (45 Remixes per Minute). Paul był bardzo dumny z tego, iż udało mu się wydać pierwszy w swojej karierze pełny album.
Rok 1994 to także okres w którym Paul regularnie grywał w klubie “E-Wark” zyskując sobie coraz większą popularność i zdobywając szacunek remixując kultowe utwory bardzo znanych i lubianych gwiazd do których z pewnością zaliczał Inspiral Carpets, Sven Wath, Curve oraz New Order. Z czasem klub został zamknięty, lecz Paul zdąrzył zyskać sobie niewiarygodną popularność, grywając wspólnie z supergwiazdami takimi jak chociażby: Nick Warren, BT, Dave Seaman oraz Sasha.
Bardzo ważnym momentem zarówno w życiu tego artysty jak i w jego karierze był moment kiedy na rynku pojawił się jego drugi album: “Seven Ways”, który niemal od razu stał się wizytówką jednego z najlepszych artystów muzyki elektronicznej. Nowy album znalazł się w setce najlepiej sprzedających się albumów a Paulowi przyniósł niebywałą popularność. To właśnie po wydaniu tego albumu Paul zaczął udzielać pierwszych lokalnych a następnie międzynarodowych wywiadów, lecz było to nieuniknione po tak udanym wydawnictwie. Nawet Angielskie media muzyczne, które były znane z tego, że rzadko chwalą międzynarodowe produkcje wypowiedziały się bardzo optymistycznie na temat “Seven Ways” a czytelnicy kultowego pisma “DJ Magazine” wybrali “Seven Ways” albumem roku. Single, jakie pojawiły się także w tym czasie: "Beautiful Place", "Forbidden Fruit" oraz "Words” kategorycznie przewarzyły szalę popularności dając Paul’owi czołowe miejsca zarówno na Brytyjskich jak i na Europejskich listach przebojów.
W roku 1998 jego pierwszy album “45 RPM” został wydany w Wielkiej Brytanii a nowy singiel “For An Angel” zaatakował światowe listy przebojów. Album przez 2 tygodnie był numerem jeden w Anglii oraz przez 4 tygodnie utrzymywał się na pierwszym miejscu na Niemieckich listach przebojów. Zajął również czołowe miejsca w takich krajach jak: Stany Zjednoczone, Autsralia, Holandia, Belgia oraz w całej Skandynawii. Był to niewątpliwy sukces Paula. Jednak nie chciał on być tylko producentem muzycznym produkującym przeboje - pragnął czegoś więcej. Pragnął być w ciągłym kontakcie ze swoją publicznością niezależnie czy grał dla 500 osob czy dla 1.5 miliona. “Gdy zaczynałem swoją karierę jako DJ, odkryłem, że istnieje prawdziwa, głęboka komunikacja pomiędzy dj’em a ludźmi którzy słuchają mojej muzyki. Nauczyłem się odczuwać pewne wibracje, przekazywać emocje które poruszają tłum i stwarzają odpowiednią atmosferę” – wspomina Paul. “Przychodząc do jakiegokolwiek klubu nigdy nie gram gotowego seta. Za każdym razem jest to dla mnie nowym doświadczeniem, gdyż nigdy nie można do końca przewidzieć co tak naprawdę się wydarzy.” Aktualnie Paul Van Dyk jest rezydentem renomowanych klubów: “Twilo” w Nowym Jorku, “Gatecrasher” w Sheffield oraz w klubie w Berlinie.
W roku 1999 Paul definitywnie rozstał się ze swoją pierwszą wytwornią “MFS” i wystartował ze swoją wytwórnią “Vandit – records”. Ten label obecnie jest odpowiedzialny za wydawanie produkcji zarówno Paul’a jak i innych nowych, młodych artystów. W Anglii natomiast, wszystkie produkcje Paul’a wydawane są przez wytwórnię: “Deviant”. Pod tym labelem został wydany potrójny (3CD) krążek “Vorsprung Dyk Technik" zawierający najbardziej znane remixy Paula van Dyka.
Jak do tej pory była to najbardziej wyczerpująca kolekcja remixów tego artysty zawierająca 33 utwory spośród których można wymienić kilka klasycznych arranżacji: Humate - "Love Stimulation"; Joe T. Vanelli - "Playing with the Voice in Germany"; klubowy hit Binary Finary – “1998” czy też “For an Angel”. W rok po wydaniu tej wyjątkowej kompilacji, "Vorsprung Dyk Technik" zyskał status srebrnej płyty w Wielkiej Brytanii sprzedając się w ponad 60 tys. egzemparzy. Trzeba zaznaczyć w tym miejscu, że jest to bardzo rzadkie osiągnięcie dla potrójnych składanek.
W roku 2000 na rynku pojawia się kolejny krążek artysty “Out there and back" i niejako już klasycznie plasuje się w ścisłej czołówce najlepiej sprzedających się albumów zarówno w rodzimym kraju – Niemczech jak i w Wielkiej Brytanii. Rok później w październiku 2001 na rynek trafia kolejny krążek zatytulowany: “Columbia EP”, który zawiera 3 nowe remixy z albumu “Out there and back”. Tego samego miesiąca lecz w 2002 roku po raz pierwszy krążek z remixami Paul Van Dyk’a ukazuje się nakładem “Ministry Of Sound” i jest to pierwsza kompilacja w twórczości Paul’a, która swoją premierę ma tego samego dnia na całym świecie. “Politics of Dancing” – bo o tym krążku tutaj mowa to całkiem nowa produkcja łącząca autorskie dokonania artysty z miksowanymi utworami innych wykonawców. Paul Van Dyk w ten sposób wyjaśnia specyficzny tutuł kompilacji: “Czy pamiętacie początki lat dziewięćdziesiątych?. Wszyscy twierdziliśmy, że to co się wtedy działo to nie był ruch polityczny tylko kulturowa jedność. Ale teraz kluby są zamykane z powodów administracyjnych. Politycy nie rozumieją i nie akceptują globalnej kultury młodzieży. To jest właśnie to na co chciałem zwrócić uwagę wydając „Politics of Dancing".”
Pisząc o tak wielkim artyście, jakim bez wątpienia jest Paul Van Dyk trudno jest opisać czociażby połowę tego, co stworzył przez wszystkie lata swojej twórczości – ten człowiek miał i ma bardzo duży wpływ na rozwój muzyki elektronicznej nie tylko w Europie. Jednak sam Paul jest człowiekiem bardzo skromnym i jak sam mówi: „(...)Dla mnie nie jest ważny sukces , czy pozycja na liście , ważniejsi są ludzie , rodzina , przyjaciele i wszyscy dla których coś zmieniłem. Jestem naprawdę zadowolony kiedy ktoś mówi mi że moja muzyka zmieniła coś w jego życiu.”
